Topic: Hike/ski/snowshoe to cabin for dinner

I was cookin up and idea with Paul yesterday....lol, see what I did there 

Was thinking about organizing a group outing over in Gatineau Park. Meet up at Herridge Cabin to feast on some dinner (pot luck or bring your own) then make our way back out under the cover of dark with headlamps/flashlights.

People would have the option of skiing in from P16 along trail 50....or hiking/snowshoeing in from P15 along trail 70 (I did this one last weekend and the snow is packed enough right now that snowshoes are not required...hiking boots are fine).

Once we get an idea of the interest level we can work out some details.

OK - here is a bit more to narrow things down.

Thursday night looks like a nice night...we wouldn't be out too late for those that work Friday.

Friday looks nice with a light snowfall, but it's New Years so a lot of people will have plans already.

Saturday it's supposed to warm up to +6 and rain  so that probably won't be a great day.

Sunday looks ok right now......and a lot of people should have Monday off work. The only concern is what kind of shape the trails will be in after the rain on Saturday.

The hike in is about an hour and fifteen minutes. So leaving time to eat, drink and be merry...we'd probably be looking at 4.5 - 5 hours round trip from the parking lot.

Post up what days you're available and then we can firm up some details.

I wouldn't worry so much about the "when"... lets just zen this sh!t up... it'll happen when it happens, i'll bring sauce and pasta... someone will bring garlic bread made up in an Outback Oven... we will drink red wine from a wineskin... we will share warm fuzzy memories (unlike the kind Karl shares)... the joy comes from NOT planning it out... I HATE those people... jerks.

Looks like Sunday works for most people, and right now the forecast looks alright.

How does a 3:00 departure from the trailhead sound?

We'd be at the cabin by 4:30, eat and lounge, then head out around 6:00 or so, and we'd be back at the vehicles by 7:30.

Here are some details:

Hikers/snowshoers - departing from P15

Cross country skiers - departing from P16

Destination - Herridge Cabin

Easiest way to find the parkings lots at the trailheads is to take King Edward to the Macdonald-Cartier Bridge. Stay straight and follow Highway 5 towards Wakefield. Drive Highway 5 until it ends (including the new part) and it connects with Highway 105. There is a traffic light here - hikers and skiers turn different directions here.

Skiers - turn right on 105 and drive about 1.55 km and take the first right on Chemin Pine. Drive 1.1 km down Pine to P16 on the left side of the road.

Hikers - turn left on 105 and drive about 1.55 km and take a left on Chemin Cross Loop. Drive 1.8 km down Chemin Cross Loop to P15 on the right side of the road.

To get to the cabin:

Skiers - take Trail #50 for about 5 km. When you see a stone gate on your left, you're there.

Hikers - take Trail #70 past Healey Cabin - it's 4.4 km

It's not a technical trail at all, and unless conditions change between now and then, you don't even need snowshoes as the trail is pretty hard packed. I will check it out before Sunday and post an update on the conditions.

As we'll be coming out in the dark you'll need lights. Headlamp is best, but flashlights work too.

We can do potluck or everyone fend for themselves. Herridge is a good size cabin with two floors and lots of tables, there is also a wood-stove that pumps out the heat and can be used (carefully) for cooking, or we can bring camp stoves.

If the people who want to come can confirm that you want to come, and whether you are going to hike or ski....I'll edit the first post with a list - then we can work out menus etc.

Everyone is welcome to attend....it's really a walk in the park and should be fun.

As stated, I got a 1, 2, and 3 litre pot to work with... I can bring 1 or 2 litres of wicked homemade pasta sauce... not sure a 3 litre pot will hande enough pasta however... everyone else is on their own... suckers.

I've got a camp stove and enough fuel for a couple hours worth of boiling. Considering it'll boil a cup of water in 3 minutes. We should have plenty of heat. Everybody is encouraged to bring a eating vessel of some sorts (I use a measuring cup with a lid on it) and a fork or something.
