Title: Rider Down reports - 2010
Post by: rev on April 13, 2010, 07:47:04 AM
Just heard that a bike went down near the corner of Clarence & Cumberland in Orleans East. Rider was taken away by ambulance.

Be careful out there ... roads are slick in the early morning hours.

On my way to work this morning, around 8:45, saw a fire trucks, police cars and ambulances arrive at the scene of the crash.

The bike was down on its side, at the corner of the sidewalks.  I couldn't see the rider but he may have been close to the bike because emergency crew was gathered around it.

I don't know exactly what kind of bike it was, but probably some kind of touring or sports touring bike... it has one of those luggage boxes mounted high up in the rear.  I just remember seeing the exhaust pipes and concluding it's a v-twin of some sort.

I hope the rider is OK.  There were no cars around that seemed to have been involved in the accident.  Also hope it wasn't a hit & run...

At about 6:15 PM tonight saw a couple big cruisers at the intersection of Fallowfield and Greenbank. One cruiser was down with a lot of front fairing damage and the other bike was upright parked beside him. Rider was heading north and I could see him bending over with someone talking to him. He looked more upset than anything. Could not see much just passing through, but I did not see any cars banged up. Hope they are ok.

RIP to the kid on the bike. As a father, I can't imagine what the parents are going through.

I have my own report. I went down yesterday on the Island Park Bridge. I was leading a group from work, keeping pace with traffic at 2 seconds behind the car in front of me. I glanced down at my mirrors to check on the guys, and a car, three cars ahead of me jammed on his brakes so he could turn down onto Bate Island. The cars in front of me jammed on their brakes and went in different directions. I looked up just in time to jam on my brakes, but the bike went down and slid under the car in front of me. My friends said it looked like I tried to maneuver, but my rear locked up. Another few inches and I might have made it. Bruised ribs, sprained finger and a little rash (from the inside of my jacket). I think the bike is a write-off.

Injured motorcyclist in the Carling collision last night has been downgraded to STABLE and has been identified as 26 yr old Kyle Ferguson - from CBC 2:30 news

(The name changed from the 2:30 report to the 3:30 report. At 2:30 they said Davis - media never gets it right.)

Got 4 calls from co-workers yesterday about a red bike down on Island Park at ~5:00 pm yesterday. I must have just missed it when I rode by there. (Everyone's concerned in the office that I ride).

I can't find anything in the Ottawa Citizen website. Red bike, sounded like pick-up truck turned infront of him.

http://www.ottawacitizen.com/Paramedics+unable+save+life+after+motorcycle+crash+Rockcliffe+Parkway/3123950/story.html

OTTAWA — A man in his 50s has died after a collision between his motorcycle and a car Monday just before 5 p.m. on Rockcliffe Parkway.

The collission occurred behind the Robert O. Pickard Environmental Centre near Green’s Creek and the Aviation Parkway, paramedics said.

Rockcliffe Parkway eastbound was closed to traffic from Aviation Parkway to Greens Creek at 5:45 p.m.

Paramedics at the scene were still trying to revive the man as of 5:15 p.m., but he was declared dead a short while later. His name has not been released.

The motorcycle also caught fire, but was extinguished a short time later by firefighters.

The 64-year-old woman traveling in the car was being stabilized, said Ottawa fire District Chief Jim Corrigan.

Trottier said the woman, who was conscious, was being treated for a head injury, a fractured leg and ribs. She was taken to hospital, and was in serious but stable condition, he said.

Ottawa police, firefighters, paramedics and RCMP were all on the scene.

It was not immediately known what caused the crash.

The accident might have been a head-on collision, Const. Michel Hébert of Ottawa fire said. Traffic investigators were on the scene as of 5:45 p.m. Monday.

From the Cornwall Standard-Freeholder:

CORNWALL - A collision claimed the life of a Morrisburg man riding a motorcycle Monday evening.

After 8:30 p.m., provincial police officers arrived at the scene of a deadly collision between a Mitsubishi sedan and a motorcycle on Country Road 18, just east of Dixon's Corners (the intersection of County Road 16), in South Dundas Township.

The man on the motorcycle, Robert Edgerton of Morrisburg, 55, did not survive the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the OPP.

Investigators have discovered that an 18-year-old man driving a Harley Davidson motorcycle from South Dundas had attempted to pass another vehicle headed west when he collided with the motorcycle ridden by Edgerton, which was travelling east.

There are charges pending against the 18-year-old driver.

He was not injured in the collision.

SD&G OPP officers are investigating the collision with the assistance of Technical Traffic Collision Investigators and OPP Crime Unit investigators.

The OPP urges anyone with information about the collision to call them at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Slight correction to the above.  The article indicates that the 18 year old was driving a Mitsubishi and Edgerton was riding a Harley.

Charges are pending against the 18 year old.

It did sound convoluted . . . as if the rider got clipped by an 18-year-old on a Harley and then hit the SUV.

In any case, poor Edgerton. Yes, RIP.

That sucks Rocco......I said before in another thread that it's not the cyclists that are the problem in the Gats. It's the damn cagers that aren't patient enough to wait a few minutes and insist in crossing the centre line to get around then...even when there is a motorcycle in the oncoming lane. It's like they feel we're not entitled to the whole lane because we're not as big as them.

Friday Morning I hit a deer just after merging on to 416 at Hunt Club going Northbound. Bike stayed up so all I got was a bruised left leg where the deer must of crushed it into bike.

Bike has seen better days but appears all cosmetic (all front fairings/head light assembly). Will need to get forks checked for sure but do not think they are bent.

Hey YammyR6. Details? How big a deer? Did it run into the side of the bike, or did you hit it? How tough was it to stay upright? What happened to the deer?

As someone who lives out in the country and has already hit a couple of deers while on four wheels, I worry that it is only a matter of time before I hit one on the bike.
Title: Re: Rider Down reports - 2010
Post by: YammyR6 on June 29, 2010, 11:39:15 AM
Can't say the size of the Deer, all I saw was a blur.

Was merging on to 416 at Hunt Club going Northbound, just completed the merge seconds before. There was a White four door sedan in the left lane just ahead of me, what I figure occured was the deer bolted out infront of the white sedan missing him completly (don't remember seeing any brake lights coming on from the sedan)  and then all I saw was again the blur and felt the impact, it took me a second in my head to realize I just hit a deer and confirm the fact by looking down at bike and seeing fairings flapping and pain in my leg. I pulled over to recoupe and check out the damage. I believe I basicly clipped his head with the front of bike and then forced him along the left side of my bike which crushed my leg (nothing broken luckly just bad bruise that lasted for 3 days, almost can't feel it today).

As for how hard to keep it up, I guess it depends on how big and how you hit it, but for me I don't recall any violent shakes of steering and bike stayed firmly planted upright.

As for Damage I havent' taken it to shop yet (waiting for insurance claim dept to get back to me to find out where they like me to take it)
Bike is an 09 GSXR 750, All Left Side Fairings are pretty much gone, air intake tubes from front gone, headlight assembly has pieces of the reflector cone broken inside, right side fairings are there but alot of holding clips are broken deeming them needing replacement as well.

2 cars stopped to make sure I was ok, and they mentioned the deer was hanging around field/road looking hurt (I should of asked them the size).
Side Note I was on side of road gathering plastics and wits to ride it home, when I finally got back on the OPP pulled me over a minute down the 416 and informed me I was fleeing the scene of an accident. So if you hit a deer make sure to call it in.

It's only leaving the scene of an accident if the damage is over $1000, under $1000 you do not need to call the cops.  I got pinched for this a few years back but in court I said I am not a body shop person or insurnace claims expert so I cannot tell you how much the damage cost, they dropped the charges.

For Georges sake I hope it wasn't on a BRC!!

I would like everyone to know that George is doing great; we've had an insane amount of emails/calls from people wondering how he's doing and if he's ok. :) Long story short, a speed wobble took him off-roading; he kept the bike upright as long as he could, and even told all the nurses and doctors that he "almost saved it". He's a bit busted up, but he'll be back in action in no time. Nothing too serious or life threatening, so we have a lot to be thankful for!
Thanks again to everyone for your concern! unquote

FYI, everyone: Suffy went down yesterday on Desert Lake Rd.
He's alive, but with a fractured collar bone and a few other aches and pains.
Salami was leading us on a ride to Sydenham for breakfast. We turned down Desert lake Rd and he warned us of the sand in various spots.
There's a hill followed by a nice right at the bottom at Devos Rd. Suffy hit a patch of gravel, low sided, got the bike back up but not before running out of road.
He did a lovely job re-landscaping this nice lady's lawn with the right hand side of his bike.
Also, there's a nice Suffy-shaped dent in her ditch.
Blackkat and I went with him to Kingston General while the other guys stayed behind while CAA came and picked up his bike.

Hats off to Heather, Terry's wife for picking up Amy and bringing her to Kingston General.
You've got some good friends, Dave. Speedy recovery.

Coming home from Smiths Falls and passed the aftermath of an accident on Bankfield in Manotick, involved a car and what looked like a cruiser at the rear of the car, emergency crews were on scene, ambulance still there. They were just hoisting the cruiser with a tow truck, the fire people had put down absorbal so it looked like gas or oil. No sign of the rider or driver. Happened around 2 pm or so.

"Emergency crews are treating a motorcyclist who broke all four limbs after a collision with a pick-up truck in south Ottawa Saturday afternoon.

The crash happened around 5:15 p.m. near the intersection of Bank St. and Marionville Rd.

Ottawa fire spokesman Marc Messier said two trucks and eight firefighters arrived to assist paramedics. The motorcycle driver — a man in his 50s — is in serious condition, but is expected to survive.

The driver of the half-ton pick-up truck wasn't injured. "

Another rider down...this time at Fallowfield just west of the Littlle Animal Farm.  Grey Honda Sportsbike (looked alot like Suffies) collided with an older Ford Taurus.  By the time I rode by around 6:00 PM, emergencies crews had already left, and the car & bike were getting ready to be towed.

Anyone know other details or if the victim(s) are on this board?

I went by at about 520 - emergency crews were still there - ambulance was getting ready to load rider - looked like he was in shorts and a wife beater and he was screaming, so I'm guessing he has at the very least a rash. The marks on the road this morning look like the bike was turning right at the intersection when he was hit.

I rode past there too but by then the rider was gone, the bike was still in the ditch and the car was heading onto the tow truck. It was weird that neither the car nor the bike were right at the intersection. They were both west of it. The car had a dent in the passenger front fender and the passenger mirror was smashed. Did the car maybe U-turn in front of the bike?

The police had the intersection of Parkdale and Scott shut down this morning on my walk into work. I went by at a distance, so I didn't see too much. Looked long enough to see a bike (pretty sure it was a cruiser) layed down flat on its side in the center of the intersection. There's an ambulance on scene.

They were redirecting traffic a block away, so it didn't look too encouraging.

Saw a rider down yesterday around 11:00 at the corner of mcneeley and lake street  (about 2km from the tims meetings place along hwy7).  Was an older guy (60's?) on a cruiser with crash bars.  Bike looks mostly undamaged, he was laying on the ground in the middle of the intersection moving his arms and legs but did not get up.  Emergency crew arrived and immediately put a neck brace on him (which is standard procedure I think?).

2nd rider down I've seen with my wife in the last 2 weeks (who is very nervous about me riding)  :(

Saw on the 11:00 news accident between bike and car on Fisher this afternoon. The car had most of the passenger side severely pushed in. The bike was so smashed up I couldn't make out what it was. News said the biker was in critical condition when the paramedics arrived with head and chest injuries. Hope the driver makes full recovery.

Updated story from Ottawa Sun....

The team doctor for the Ottawa Senators is fighting for his life Sunday night after a two-vehicle collision on Fisher Ave. Saturday afternoon.

Dr. Donald Chow, 53, is in intensive care at the Ottawa Hospital in a coma, sources tell the Sun.

Family is at his side. His injuries are massive head and chest injuries, hospital officials say.

Dr. Chow is an orthopaedic surgeon in Ottawa.

The Senators released a statement early Sunday evening.

"The Ottawa Senators team doctor, Don Chow, was involved in a traffic accident late Saturday afternoon. The entire Senators family wishes Dr. Chow a full recovery and our thoughts and support are with him and his family. All medical updates on Dr. Chow’s status will be provided from his family through the Ottawa Hospital."

The team added there would be no further comment from them.

Dr. Chow's motorcycle collided with a car driven by an elderly woman at Kintyre Pt. at about 3 p.m.

Paramedics found him lying unconscious on the ground. He had severe head injuries.

The woman was treated for small cuts sustained when her car window shattered. Her car suffered serious damage to one side and came to a stop on a lawn at one corner of the intersection.

The bike lay in the middle of Fisher Ave.

Paramedics provided an especially speedy response -- only 13 minutes elapsed from the time they received the call, to when the victim arrived at hospital.

Police have not said if charges will be laid.

Went in to see him today, but his family was there and I didn't want to intrude on their private time.  I was working as the Chief Medical Officer at Mosport yesterday and we were joking about working with him at the track Saturday afternoon not knowing that he had been involved in an accident that same day.  Got a text from a colleague at the hospital just after I arrived back in Ottawa last night.  I was completely dumbfounded.

It is hard when it hits close to home, but if it had to happen he is in the right place with the right people looking after him.

Rear ended on baseline today by a minivan between clyde and navaho in bumper to bumper traffic.

Crap load of cosmetic damage done to the bike. But main thing is I'm un-hurt!

The guy wasn't paying attention, then skidded in the rain when he saw me... I was in the left lane, right rut (blocking position). I got knocked off my bike and into the right hand lane. Fortunately there was no cars there at the time.

Another FAIL of this story was.. while i was waiting for the cops to show up to file a report.. 3 other separate rear enders happend because they were looking at my accident and not the road.

OTTAWA DRIVERS = FAIL!

Well good news sort of.  My Ducati only has a small abraision that you have to look for  on the tank plastic and a broken signal light.  Bad news my shoulder is still messed up.  Oh to be 20 again and heal fast.

Funny if I went down on pavement the Duc would probably be more damaged and I would have had a few road rash spots as I would have slid.

Because I went down on gravel the Duc is ok but i am messed up because I did not slide.

Go figure.

not sure if this was the correct forum but I posted it here anyway.

Senators doctor's condition improves   :hello2: :hello2: :hello2:

Last Updated: Friday, September 3, 2010 | 6:22 PM ET Comments4Recommend6.CBC News
Doctors at Ottawa Hospital on Friday upgraded the condition of the Senators team doctor.

Dr. Donald Chow's condition was upgraded from critical to serious, a hospital spokesperson said.

Chow, 53, was driving his motorcycle on Fisher Avenue in Ottawa last Saturday just before 3 p.m., when he collided with a car at the intersection with Kintyre Private. Chow suffered severe head and chest injuries, paramedics said.

The elderly woman driving the car was transported to hospital with minor injuries, paramedics said.

Chow, known as "Doc Chow," has been with the Senators since 1992, said a media statement on the NHL team's website.

"He's a very caring person. He's helped every one of us in one way or another," general manager Bryan Murray said.

http://www.ottawasun.com/news/ottawa/2010/09/07/15272871.html

A 40-year-old Ottawa man is in hospital with serious injuries after being thrown from his motorbike Tuesday morning.

Ottawa paramedics responded to the call at the intersection of Huntmar Rd. and Palladium Dr. at about 10:36 a.m.

They treated the man for serious abrasions to his chest, back and shoulder injuries.

The man may have been thrown a distance of 10 metres after losing control of his motorcycle.

He is in serious but stable condition in hospital.

Huntmar actually intersects with Palladium in two places.  The north intersection heading towards richardson side road is a fun turn, but there is almost always a ton of gravel in that area.  I bet that is what happened.   Hopefully he makes a speedy recovery.

Scott (sparetire) went down this evening - I talked with him briefly on the phone. It happened near/on Clegg. Apparently a driver decided at the last second to turn left in front of him. His bike is apparently in pretty rough shape, when I talked to him he was in an ambulance - his knee is apparently not in the best shape. Otherwise he said he was pretty okay.

Let's hope he heals up well and quickly, and that insurance takes care of the rest!

Dirt biker hurt in crash

By DOUG HEMPSTEAD, Ottawa Sun

Last Updated: September 23, 2010 3:34pm

A dirt biker was airlifted to hospital after a crash in the far west end Thursday.

According to fire officials, the crash happened around 2:30 p.m. in a field off Vaughan Side Rd. near Forest Edge Rd.

The bike operator, a man in his 30s, is reported to have shoulder and spinal injuries. He was treated on scene and stabilized by Ottawa firefighters until the air ambulance arrived in a nearby field.

According to Ottawa Fire spokesman Marc Messier, the crash happened after one of two dirtbikes went out of control.

The injured biker was conscious and alert when flown to hospital.

He is being treated at Ottawa Hospital's Civic campus.

Boy, those cage drivers still don't learn do they, what is it going to take to get the message out.

OTTAWA — One man was sent to hospital and another has been charged after a motorcycle and car collided Monday night.

The accident happened at 10:48 p.m. at the intersection of Parkdale and Lyndale avenues.

The 28-year-old motorcyclist was heading north on Parkdale Avenue, while a 27-year-old man driving a Chevrolet Malibu was going south.

“The car made a left turn onto a driveway, cutting off the motorcycle, which collided with the car,” said Ottawa police spokesman Const. Jean Paul Vincelette.

Paramedics treated the motorcyclist at the scene for head, neck and back injuries. He was then taken to The Ottawa Hospital’s trauma centre at the nearby Civic campus.

Police have charged the driver of the car under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act with making an unsafe turn, Vincelette said.

A 20-year-old man is fighting for his life in hospital after his motorcycle hit a car near Albion and Southgate roads in the south side of the city.

The collision occurred around 5 p.m. Monday leaving pieces of the sport bike scattered across the pavement.

A witness said he could see the motorcyclist moving his leg as he was being placed into the ambulance, but Ottawa Paramedic superintendent Lise Laporte said the man was in very critical condition.

Police are on the scene investigating and that part of the road is closed to traffic.
