registration without insurance?
« on: October 18, 2017, 05:15:51 PM »
Hypothetical question - if you purchase a used bike (private sale, bike is currently registered in Ontario if that makes a difference), can you go to the MTO and transfer the ownership so that it would be in your name without purchasing an insurance for it. Not getting into the details as to why not get the insurance now, but maybe the owner doesn't have an M license yet and isn't planning to ride it till spring (but doesn't want to pass on a good deal), or maybe it will be a project bike that might take a while to finish.

Thank you for your input!

If I remember correctly, you can get the ownership changed to the new owner but you can't get it plated without insurance and a safety certificate.

That makes perfect sense (no tags without insurance), thanks! As for safety - when I bought a used bike in Quebec I went to Service Ontario (no safety at that point, but I did have it insured) and got the plates and a temporary sticker (good for 2 weeks I believe). When I got the safety done it was another trip to Service Ontario to get a 'regular' sticker.

I have bought 3 bikes in the last 2 years that are sitting in my shed. They are in my name but unplated. There's no problem doing this.

I think the only real issue is you will need to pay the $32 (or whatever) printing fee again for when you plate the bike and have to get new papers. In addition to the sticker and plate, if needed.
