New bike
« on: June 04, 2017, 05:55:11 AM »
As I was fixing up my trusty old steed recently, I went to a local bike shop to source some parts for the KLR, which was within 2 hours of being fully repaired and ready for another stab at the provincial safety check it failed a month ago.
That shop didnt have the part yet, so my brother and i who had taken the day off anyways went window shopping

On the floor was a 2015 Yamaha FJ09, fully kitted out, with only 8400km. Asking was 9995.
I tried to resist but long story short, I wound up buying it for 9500 . I didnt go planning to buy, but I had demo ridden that bike a year ago and was simply taken by it. It made me feel like I had felt when I first got the KLR 13 years ago. I just couldnt resist its call.

I sold the KLR a week later for 800CAD. It had 85000KM and was fixed up. The new buyer wasnt interested in having me safety it, as he was going to strip it down and rebuild it as a bonding experience with his step son. His only complaint about it, after a short test ride, was "it sure ain't no VMAX" (his current ride).

Great buy, congrats! I was loaned an FJ09 for a few hours last year and I loved the thing.

Here's a few mediocre quality pictures...
No jokes about the chicken strips on the back tire!  I'm still getting used to the bike.  :)
I had about 1/4" chicken strips on the KLR, but I also had been riding it for 13 years so I knew it pretty intimately.

The FJ-09 accessories that weren't standard are:
- top box and side luggage
- radiator guard
- extended rear tire hugger
- tall windscreen
- corbin seat
The salesman told me it also had heated grips, but It doens't actually appear to.

Lol..  thanks.

My brother is saying the same thing (he has a Versys).  Says I've jumped ship.

If Kawasaki had demo days the last couple years I might be on a new Kawasaki now.  But they didn't.  Yamaha did and it got me to buy an FJ09.
I wanted to ride a new Versys, and a Concours and a couple other Kawsaki's, but Goodtime wouldn't let me, and Kawasaki wouldn't do demo days...
THeir loss.

If you have that in writing, ask for some assistance on purchasing new ones?  I never had them before this winter, can't believe I never bought them before.   Hugely worthwhile IMO.

+1

As for the Kawi demo days, the last couple of years, they held it at Calabogie, but it wasn't well promoted.

Sadly, it was Verbal, not in writing.  Though I will be heading to the dealer I got it at on Thursday, maybe I'll mention it and see if they would still do anything.

As for the Kawasaki demo days being at Calabogie, ya, no kidding about it not being well promoted.  I asked two different Kawasaki dealers, both of which told me that Kawasaki wasn't doing demo days in Canada (in both 2015 and 2016), and the Kawasaki website didn't mention it when I looked there either.

I went to the one in 2013 or 2014 at bogie and it was fun.
I did ask Jason about the demo rides, and he said Kawi doesn't care to give them anymore. I checked their website, and they have no info for demo days, so I guess he was correct.

Too bad, I wanted to try out a Z900.
