Many IP blocks have been banned
« on: November 28, 2012, 01:52:41 PM »
Over the last two weeks we have been getting many spammers trying to sign up.  I have been banning blocks of IP addresses to curb spammers from registering.

I received a report that I may have banned an IP that is used by the Opera mobile browser proxy.  If you have encountered this problem, please PM me the details.

Thanks.

I have been getting about on average 5 a day for who knows how long, if the IP is not within Canada I just use the * to block them all, I am sure you know how to do it but an example 180.*.*.* that way they all get banned from the 180 IPS

We've been getting a few hundred a day.  95% of them are blocked automatically by the filters and we're adding the new IP blocks as they come.

This should be fixed.  If we get too many spammers using that proxy, we will have no choice but to reinstate the ban.

A few forums ive been on made it so that an admin had to manually accept new users. do we get a lot of new people that would make that option not feasible?

Have you looked into geo-locking the forum? This is a regional service so it would make sense to reject sign ups from ip's outside the region. I don't know how effective it is but it might be worth a try.

This is kind of in place.  It's a manual step at this point.

You mean you Google the IP and see where it's from?  :icon_biggrin:

a problem with geolocking the forum is it can also exclude anyone who say......likes netflix or hulu and uses a full time VPN or proxy through their router.

Not quite.  The forum has links to look up the registry and see which organization the IP belongs to and the range of IP addresses that organization owns.

I'm banning organizations rather than entire class A IP blocks.  It takes more time but is more targeted.

The majority of spammers are connecting from China, Ukraine, Russia or USA.

Looks like the proxy IP address that Opera mini uses on my smart phone has been banned for a couple of weeks too.  Depending on your version of Opera and the proxy it uses, your caught in the ban as well.

Hopefully the mods can get us back on.

I just got back from working over seas in the middle east. I wasn't able to get on the forum. My IP was blocked, but a proxy at least let me read and lurk while I was away.

I've tweaked the ban rules.  Hopefully, it should fix the problems with Opera and viewing the forum from overseas.

Let me know if there are still issues.
